 CSU launches Sago Eco-innovation Village during the Adlaw Hong Butuan Celebration

Caraga State University joins the celebration of Adlaw Hong Butuan through the Sago Eco-Innovation Village Launching on July 30, 2018 held at the J.C Aquino St., Guingona Park. The launching aims to showcase the research-based extension strategy integrating local initiatives enhancing the natural treasures of the city.

Sago Eco-innovation Village is anchored on Agri-forestry endeavour with the goal of contributing to food security, DRRM, and enlivening the culture of Butuan. The launching is a collaboration of the City Agriculture Office, Barangay Baan, and Caraga State University, spearheaded by the Office of theVice President for Research and Extension as the Project Leader.

According to Dr. Rowena P. Varela- Vice President for Research and Extension “Atong e train ang mga sectoral groups sa Barangay para ma utilize ang Sago into something nga useful, naay economic importance and ecological values”. She also states that Sago is not only for the production of Palagsing (Butuan’s Famous Delicacy), buta source of other products like Sago Spread, Baked Sago Nuggets, Sago Cookies, Sago Muffins and Palagsing Mix with potential for export with the help of the Food and Innovation Center (FIC). Sago has also been recognized as a source of starch for industrial applications such as hydrogel, bio-plastic and bio-energy.

The Adlaw Hong Butuan celebration is an avenue to showcase local agriculture products and researches that represent pride in the city. The event is supported by Butuan City Mayor, Engr. Ronnie Vicente C. Lagnada, the City Agriculture Office headed by Engr. Pierre Anthony Joven, and CSU President, Dr. Anthony M. Penaso with other CSU key officials, Dr. Armie Leila M. Mordeno - Vice President for Administration, Dr. Rolando N. Paluga - Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Felix A. Ocarez, Chief, Presidential Management Staff, and Dr. Raquel M. Balanay- CCAARRD Director.

The program ended with a message from Dr. Varela saying, “The project would be difficult without the Food Innovation Center (FIC) and the Material Science &Polymer Lab. Thanks to DOST-Caraga& DOST-PCIEERD. Thanks to CSUCC through Prof. Cecil Delima, Dr. Marilyn Castillo, Prof. Maria Jovita C. Serrano, Dr. Rey Capangpangan & the Chemistry team, all the other colleges, the CEIT, CAS, CAAI, CEd and CoFES. We need to work on the project as a team to bring out the best of Sago and establish the Sago Industry for the benefit of the people. The dream is too big but I believe it is doable” she said.
