The faculty in the Department of Environmental Science joined the 2nd Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary Summit last November 21, 2018 held at Ernielita’s Events Venue in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. The events’ theme centers on sustaining biodiversity through ecotourism and extension programs in which key personnel from the Provincial Tourism Office of Agusan del Sur provided the situation and opportunities of ecotourism inside the marsh.
The marsh which is considered as a wetland is located at the heart of Mindanao, habitat to many indigenous species, a haven for migratory birds during winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, and home to Manobo indigenous people.
During the summit, the Protected Area Management Board of Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary conducted their enbanc meeting. In the meeting, Ms. Julie Rose Apdohan, Ms. Meycel Amarille, and Ms. Chime Mora-Garcia presented the final output of their studies which are Carrying capacity assessment in the floating village of Sitio Panlabuhan, Loreto, Agusan del sur; Resource valuation for Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary: Direct services; and Payment for ecosystem services for the conservation for Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary respectively. The summit also calls for the commitment of the participants to continue to protect and conserve the marsh which has a very important environmental and economic role.
