Senators "Noynoy" Aquino and Mar Roxas visit NORMISIST (now CSU)

Senators Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” C. Aquino III   and Mar A. Roxas were in NORMISIST on Friday noon, November 13, 2009 during the NORMISIST Students’ Forum held at the NORMISIST’s Sanchez Gymnasium.

Senator Mar A. Roxas is the sponsor of House Bill Number 5110 in the Senate which seeks to establish the Caraga State University (CSU). House Bill No. 5110 was passed in the Senate’s 2nd reading during the Upper House’s hearing on November 9, 2009.

Sen. Aquino declared that he would be running for President in the 2010 elections last September 9, 2009 at the Club Filipino in Manila. He is the standard bearer of the Liberal Party with Sen. Roxas as his running mate. The two visited NORMISIST together with some members of the Liberal Party such as former Cong. Nereus “Neric” Acosta and Cong. Toefisto “TG” Guingona III, as guest speakers of the Students’ Forum.

Sen. Aquino and Roxas paid a courtesy call to NORMISIST President Dr. Joanna B. Cuenca in her office at the Administration Building prior to proceeding to the gymnasium. Sen. Aquino introduced Sen. Mar. A. Roxas to Dr. Cuenca as the “architect” of the Caraga State University in the Senate. Also present in the meeting were NORMISIST’s own Dr. Myrna Marieta D. Kuizon, the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and Dr. Rowena P. Varela, the Vice President for Research and Extension (VPRE). The highlight of the short meeting was the discussion on passing the House Bill No. 5110 in the Senate prior to the closing of the 14th Congress.

Everyone in the NORMISIST community was ecstatic at the presence of the two respected senators. Thousands of students and faculty members of NORMISIST went to the gymnasium as early as 9 AM, some skipping breakfast and everyone foregoing lunch to personally see the possible next President and Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Sen. Roxas gave his message prior to Sen. Aquino and led the chanting of “CSU! CSU!”. Everyone in the gymnasium was in high spirits, singing the chant out loud; it was a while before the chanting gradually ceased. Both Senators delivered their messages well to the tightly packed crowd in the gymnasium; however due to time constraints they were only able to entertain a few questions from the audience. They proceeded immediately to the Office of the Governor in the City proper.

Prior to the arrival of Senators Aquino and Roxas, the audience was treated to fun and laughter by the comedic performance of comedian and former Councilor Dennis Padilla.
