2007 Research and Development Highlights

  • The Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement  was conducted last May 4, 2007 between the Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development (PCAMRD) represented by Executive Director, Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero III and the Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology (NORMISIST) represented by  President Dr. Edgar W. Ignacio on the establishment of the National Vermicompost and Vermimeal Production Program (NV²P²) in NORMISIST. The project was funded with 1 million pesos by the PCAMRD with NORMISIST to mass produce Eudrilus eugeniae species and serve as techno-demo facility for Caraga region and provide available facilities and personnel support for the operation of the project for a period of one year.
  • Endorsement and acceptance of Dr. Erico G. Alan as project staff of the approved Supply Chain Improvement for Abaca in Selected Areas in the Philippines, Phase 1: Evaluation Research. The project was implemented under the leadership of Dr. Pedro Armenia of LSU  with NORMISIST as co-implementing agency contributing 100,000.00 as a counterpart fund for its implementation in Caraga region. The project was funded by the PCARRD represented by its Executive Director, Dr. Patricio S. Faylon under the PCARRD Grants-in Aid program (June 26, 2007)
  • Information dissemination to respective College Deans regarding the BOT approved R & D proposals in their units for implementation effective academic year 2007 was done on June 27, 2007.
  • DA Caraga and NORMISIST held Farmers Field Day on July 30, 2007. The activity aimed to inform corn stake holders in Caraga Region on the project jointly undertaken by DA, NORMISIST, FFTC-ASPAC and MECO. Farmers’ forum and field visits to demo farms in NORMISIST, Tiniwisan, Butuan City and Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte highlighted the activity. Credit facilities accessible for corn farmers were also presented by the Agriculture and Marketing Assistance Division (DA-AMAD).  Agri-machineries  used for corn production were displayed  at Tiniwisan demo farm where Mr. Demetrio Tabelon, the Gawad Saka Awardee for corn farming at Tiniwisan, demonstrated his newly acquired  corn sheller at the rate of 3 tons/hr. NORMISIST Demo-farm displayed 51 accessions of yellow and white corn hybrids respectively which were developed in Taiwan and one local check hybrid for both yellow and white corns. The entire program was graced by Ambassador Antonio I Basilio of MECO, Dir. Sing-Hwa Hu of FFTC, OIC-RED Ricardo C. Regis of DA RFU-13 and President Edgar W. Ignacio of NORMISIST.
  • Distribution of the Bound Copies of R & D Agenda 2006 – 2010.
Bound copies of the R & D Agenda 2006-2010 were distributed to various heads of the units of the four colleges and Cabadbaran Campus which marked its implementation.
 
The R & D Agenda 2006-2010 was an output of the revision of the R & D agenda 2001-2005 which considered the amended vision and mission of NORMISIST, Regional Development Plan that emphasized on Fishery, Agroforestry, Mining and Ecotourism (FAME) and the National S & T plan. The revised R & D agenda was approved per BOT Res. No. 64-15, s. 2006.
  • Distribution of the Bound Copies of the Revised R & D Manual.
Bound copies of the revised R & D Manual were distributed to various unit heads of NORMISIST including Cabadbaran Campus.
 
The said R & D manual was a product of the revision of the 2000 R & D Manual which included provisions on ethical standards in the conduct of research, intellectual property rights and stringent monitoring and evaluation system which was approved per BOT Res No. 64-10, s. 2006 effective 2006-2007.
  • Distribution of the implementing Rules and Regulations in the Conduct of Theses.
    • The Copies of the BOT approved (BOT Res. No. 64-06 s. 2006) Theses IRR were distributed to various College Deans and Department Chairmen of NORMISIST to serve as guideline in the conduct of theses in respective graduating students of various degree programs.
    • Consultative meeting regarding the implementation of the R & D agenda; R & D Manual and Theses IRR was done on November 2007. It was observed that some areas in the IRR and R & D agenda needs revision or ammendment.
  • 3rd Annual NORMISIST R & D In-house Review.
  • The 3rd Annual NORMISIST R & D In-house Review was successfully conducted last September 12, 2007. The Institute-wide In-house review was participated in by 18 faculty researchers from the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, College of Engineering and Information Technology and Cabadbaran Campus. Two (2) on-going, fourteen (14) completed researches: 1 development project: 3 research proposals and (4) poster entries were presented in the forum.

    Coaching of faculty-group researchers was conducted by the Vice President for Research and Extension, Director of Research and Development and Dr. Miraluna L. Herrera who acted as expert of the statistics/research design at Cabadbaran Campus last December 11-13, 2007. Out of several capability building seminars conducted both in the main and Cabadbaran Campus it was found out that there was slow response of the faculty researchers when it comes to experimental research thus a different strategy was employed which helped as observed.
