Butuan City – Scientists and professors around the globe virtually gathered on a historic training on September 16, 2020 on the latest characterization techniques on nanomaterials which was spearheaded by Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan of CSU’s NanoCeNTRE in collaboration with CHED DARE TO project, “Development of Nanoparticle-decorate Paper-based Sensor for Rapid Sensing of Metal Ions”.

“Nanotechnology is key to innovation that would change the way we do things. It unlocks some of the mysteries of nature. What is left for you, the experts in the field, is to cover and find the missing pieces of this great scientific puzzle,” CSU President Anthony M. Penaso noted in his opening message.

Experts shared trends in nanotechnology. Dr. Blessie A. Basilia, Chief Science Research Specialist from DOST- Industrial Technology Development Institute discussed the “Characterization of Manufactured Nanomaterials in the Philippines”. Dr. Drexel A. Camacho of the Chemistry Department of De La Salle University made a thorough discussion on the “Visualizing the Nano World”.

In her closing message, Dr. Rowena Varela, Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Extension expressed that CSU is looking forward to more collaborations in pursuing research programs and projects in the application of Nanoscience and Technology.

The activity was part of the SciTech4dev Forum 2020, an annual event of CSU which is anchored on the theme, “Navigating the New Normal”. The training was participated by international participants across 38 countries and many showed interest for future collaboration.

CSU established the Center for Nanoscience and Technology and Research Entrepreneurship (NanoCeNTRE) to cater the needs of industry and the government sectors. NanoCeNTRE now is focused on the application of Nanotechnology in Mining, particularly in mine-waste management and metal recovery using nanohydro metallurgy technology to support the goal of sustainable mining.
