Five faculty-researchers from Caraga State University namely, Dr. Romell A. Seronay, Dr. Joycelyn C. Jumawan, Mr. Richie P. Lador, Ms. Julie Rose Apdohan, and Ms. Meycel Amarille whose research posters were accepted entries for the research poster category attended the 40th National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) at the Manila Hotel last July 11-12, 2018.

The theme of the conference was “Science and Technology-Enhanced Transformation for Sustainability and Resiliency (2018-2030)”.Objectives of the conference were: to ventilate, discuss, clarify and expound science and technology issues and use the results to formulate policies or implementing guidelines; to serve as venue for the presentation of science and technologybreakthroughs; and to provide analyses and science-based solutions/policy recommendations to the government, the private sector and society at large.

The conference was graced by notable academicians who are always working and using scientific tools that will help enhance resiliency and sustainability of the country amidst facing threats such as climate change.

The Annual Scientific Meeting is an opportunity for the scientific community—members of the academe, researchers, scientists, and government agencies to address the relevant issues related to science and technology.

The CSU researchers showcased their research results related to aquatic ecosystems, of which are the following:

  • Valuing the Hinatuan Enchanted River Underwater Cave System Using the Travel Cost Method
  • Diversity and abundance of aquatic macrophytes and its relationship with nutrient status in Lake Mainit, Caraga, Philippines
  • Diversity and status of bats in selected watershed areas in Lake Mainit, Surigao del Norte, Philippines
  • Seasonal variation in the diversity and species richness of phytoplankton in a tropical oligotrophic lake: an update in Lake Mainit, Philippines
  • Species composition and size-structure relationships of icthyofauna in Lake Mainit, Philippines
  • Bird composition, diversity, and richness in Canticol, Dona Telesflora, Tubay, Agusan del Norte
