CSU goes global with French Professor holding series of lectures and trainings in CSU

Caraga State University’s presence is not only felt in the local and national arena, CSU is going thoroughly global by sending faculty members and students in different countries to study and to train, and it is opening doors to experts from all over the world to train its faculty, staff and students.

Recently, Professor Youcef Mammeri of the Université Picardie Jules Verne (UPJV) of Amiens, France visited the Caraga State University in a span of two weeks last August 28 to September 8, 2018 and will spend another two weeks for next year under International Mathematical Union- Commission on Developing Countries (IMU-CDC) Volunteer Lectureship Program. Dr Jayrold P. Arcede of the Mathematics Department served as Dr. Mammeri’s contact person as required by IMU.

Professor Mammeri conducted a Crash Course in Mathematical Modelling showcasing the cutting-edge analytical tools that make it possible to decipher and model imbalances in ecosystems. He led several collaboration meetings with university researchers resulting to the creation of mathematical modeling research groups in CSU.

The French Professor also visited the Department of Health Caraga Region XIII thru Dr. Gerna Manatad,  Assistant RD of DOH Caraga   and SSCT, a state run college in Surigao City thru its President Dr. Gregorio Z. Gamboa Jr. to forge future collaborations. Furthermore, he also delivered a talk on Mathematics Appreciation to graduate students to promote how beautiful mathematics is.

The Crash Course in Mathematical Modelling was initiated by the Mathematics Department. It was endorsed by the CHED Caraga Regional Director through CMO No. 34, Series of 2018. The Crash Course was conducted last August 28, 2018 to September 1, 2018 that convened Mathematics faculty members from Caraga State University, Mindanao State University - Marawi, Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology, Leyte Normal University, Surigao State College of Technology, Surigao del Sur State University, and Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT). Other participants include research enthusiasts from the Department of Health Caraga and some undergraduate and graduate students of the mathematics department at CSU. The Crash Course was focused on the practical uses of Mathematical Modeling in the Philippine context.

The Collaboration Meetings were conducted throughout September 3-6 where different researches of the university were discussed by its proponents. Topics discussed were related to Vector-borne diseases like dengue and schistosomiasis, Mercury Pollution, Carbon Sequestration, Tourism Sustainability, Biodiversity, Insect movement, Soil Contamination, Air Quality, Lithium-ion Batteries, HIV, Fungus Spread in Banana, Tsunami, and Typhoon.

Last year, Dr. Mammeri visited CSU as a plenary speaker for Scitech4devt in 2017. Through these visits, he initiated partnerships in advising Masters and PHD students as a foreign supervisor with a counterpart local advisor in MathDept. This year, two Master of Science in Mathematics students who are currently doing their thesis in Mathematical Modelling will defend their works via teleconferencing this October: Mr. Junar Lingo who works on modelling the Bioaccumulation of Methylmercury in a Food Web while Mr. Jeriel Rendeza is working on the Dynamics of Carbon Sequestration.

Moreover, Irmalyn Paymalan, a PhD Math student will have her sandwich program funded by the Commission on Higher Education in LAMFA, a research laboratory in UPJV, France in January next year. Furthermore, a faculty of Math Dept, Cheryl Quindao-Mentuda will embark to graduate studies in PhD in Math thru CHED-France in the same laboratory. Ms Paymalan will study on Tsunami and Rogue waves while Ms Mentuda on Dengue Epidemics.
