Sustaining its efforts on forest conservation, afforestation, and sustainable land management practices, Caraga State University - College of Forestry and Environment Science (COFES), in partnership with the National Service Training Program (NSTP), establishes the Lawaan Park Project by planting 2,000 seedlings within the university on May 3, 2025.
The Lawaan or Dipterocarp Forest was designed and proposed by Forester Joel A. Mercado, a faculty member of COFES, which spans three years of development (2025-2028). The tree species is sought for its crucial role in ecological balance, supporting a wide range of flora and fauna, serving as carbon sinks, and protecting watersheds for sustainable freshwater resources.
Golden Paddlers currently taking their NSTP participated in the mass tree planting, assisted by Vice President for Student Affairs and Auxiliary Services Rissa L. Mercado, PhD, program coordinators, facilitators, and personnel from the General Services Office.
The establishment will serve as a model for conservation, education, and eco-tourism, solidifying the university’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable forestry in the Caraga Region and beyond | with reports from JAM/COFES
