OVPRE spearheads CSU R&D Manual Revision

The office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, headed by Dr. Rowena P. Varela spearheaded the revision of the CSU Research and Development Manual on May 22, 2017 at the CSU Conference Room.  Advancements, innovations and initiatives are so dynamic that a change to the manual is needed to  properly address certain issues.

“A manual is a guide, something that helps the user on the processes and procedures. Like a milling plant operation manual, if it is not adhered to, someone may cut a finger for not following instructions to the details,” Dr. Varela emphasized.

“In the past, the manual was just like an ornament, but when the research mentality of the people in this university started to grow. We have begun receiving funds from external sources. Just recently, we received questions in the office asking about the process on how to evaluate a proposal, who shall evaluate and all the evaluation process flow.  I cannot answer these questions because these are not supported by our current manual,” she continued.

To date, CSU has established different research and development Centers. These include the Center for Research in Environmental Management and Eco-governance (CRÈME); Engineering Training, Research, Innovation and Commercialization (CENTRIC); Caraga Mechatronics and Robotics Research and Innovation Center; Caraga Center for Geo-Informatics; Center for Renewable Energy and Alternative Technologies (CREATE); Information and Communication Technology Center (ICT); Food and Innovation Center (FIC); Mindanao Institute for Mineral Resources Management Research and Training (MinRes); Caraga Center for Agricultural Research and Entrepreneurship (Caraga-CARE); Action towards Greater Advancement of Knowledge (AGAK); Mathematical and Statistical Computing Center (MSCC); Caraga Center for Peace and Development (Caraga Peace Center); and Human Capital Building R&D Program.

Dr. Varela further remarked, “This is the fifth time that we revised this manual. We have to revise the manual of operations based on our experience – on what we encounter in our researches; but we also need to make this futuristic to be relevant even until 2022.”

CSU President, Dr. Anthony M. Penaso had been very vocal about the faculty to further enhance their research skills and enliven research endeavors which the university have also pushed for. For him, every day is accreditation day and those who do not publish will perish. LA & RAL
