Caraga State University, through its Department of Biology, successfully hosted a Workshop on Laboratory Biosafety Risk Assessment in collaboration with the BioRisk Association of the Philippines 2015, Inc. (BRAP2015) on November 26, 2025. The event brought together faculty and laboratory staff from CSU, other higher education institutions, and hospitals in Caraga, enhancing their skills and practical knowledge in laboratory biosafety and risk management.
Subject matter experts from BRAP2015 delivered a comprehensive set of lectures and hands-on activities designed to enhance laboratory safety practices in academic and research environments. Topics included:
- Introduction to Biorisk Management with emphasis on regulatory compliance and global best practices
- Mitigation Strategies for preventing and managing laboratory-associated risks
- Biosafety Levels and Practices, highlighting appropriate facility, equipment, and procedural requirements
- Practical Approaches to Risk Assessment, providing participants with tools to systematically evaluate hazards in laboratory workflows
Participants also took part in skill-building workshops, including a PPE Workshop on proper selection, donning, and doffing of protective equipment, and a Spill Response Management Workshop, where they learned step-by-step procedures for containing and responding to laboratory spills.
The training reinforced CSU’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety and preparedness in all laboratory settings. Through this partnership with BRAP2015, the university continues to strengthen its capacity to maintain safe, compliant, and resilient research and teaching laboratories.
