CarSUCCESS Stories: Dr. Rowena P. Varela

Presented by the Public Information and Communication Office.

When Caraga State University (CarSU) was given the honor to name its first University Professor, the highest academic rank, it chose a WOMAN. This powerful decision tells a story of recognition and trust in the depth of the contributions, leadership, and excellence that women bring to the academe.
To cap the celebration of Women’s Month, we present the first #𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, featuring Dr. Rowena Paglinawan Varela. Known fondly as “Ma’am Weng” within the university community, she is not only an agricultural genius but also a driving force who helped ‘plant’ the university’s Research and Development System by being the longest-serving Vice President of the pillar.
Her story reminds us that women do not merely take up space— they are meant to lead, create, and thrive.

#ImmerseInCSU

The #ImmerseInCSU series compiles short remarks about the takeaways of our visitors, interns, and all those who have #immersed themselves in the university community.

“I am thankful and glad that, as a member of the Mamanwa tribe, I was given the opportunity to visit CSU [Caraga State University]. I will do my best so that I can study here, and I hope that other tribes [Indigenous Peoples] will also have the opportunity to study at CSU.” | Maria Mae C. Subay

“I am deeply grateful to CSU [Caraga State University], the NCIP, and the Provincial Government for the opportunity and support extended to our Indigenous Peoples (IP) youth. I have seen the fair and equal treatment given to our IPs here in the university. I envision that all youth who dream of studying at CSU will have the chance. I also envision that our IP youth will receive appropriate and quality education.”  | Datu Pigsaulangan Ruben Binongcasan Mandahinog

“Being an intern at CSU helped me develop some of the most important real-world skills, including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

The best part of the experience was the amazing hospitality and strong work ethic of CSU’s staff and professors, who guided us with patience and care, and helped us understand things we had not yet fully grasped.

I would love to work with these amazing people again in the future!” | Allan B. Lañas
