Caraga State University hosted a Volunteer Lecturer Course on ‘Data Assimilation and Machine Learning for Environmental Problems’ with Professor Emeritus Mark Asch from the Université de Picardie Jules Verne in France. This initiative marks a significant stride towards global academic cooperation.

Faculty members and graduate students from the university, as well as those from other esteemed institutions such as Mindanao State University (MSU) Main and Iligan Institute of Technology, and Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT), were invited to participate from October 9 to October 19, 2023.

The course delved into the intersection of data assimilation and machine learning, offering valuable insights into addressing environmental challenges through cutting-edge technologies. With a focus on practical applications, participants gained hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge that could potentially contribute to sustainable solutions for environmental issues.

The presence of Professor Mark Asch, an eminent figure in the field, added a distinguished touch to the course, further emphasizing the importance of global partnerships in advancing education and research. Faculty members and graduate students engaged in interactive sessions, discussions, and collaborative projects, creating a platform for the exchange of ideas and the exploration of innovative approaches to environmental problem-solving. As they return to their respective institutions armed with new knowledge and perspectives, the impact of this international collaboration is expected to resonate in research and initiatives addressing environmental challenges in the Philippines and beyond.

This Volunteer Lecturer Program was established by the International Mathematical Society (IMU) – Commission for Developing Countries. By giving institutions in developing nations financial support to host a volunteer lecturer for an intensive course, it aims to promote research and international interaction between mathematicians in developing nations and the global mathematical community. │Jayrold Arcede/pico
