Hiroshima University professors Dr. Lawrence M. Liao and Dr. Makoto Hirayama visited Caraga State University on June 1, 2018, and lectured on the importance of biodiversity and application of algal lectin.

Dr. Liao talked about Multiple challenges towards greater biodiversity awareness: exploring personal and institutional initiatives. He emphasized that biodiversity should not be confined in the four corners of the laboratory rooms but should be expanded and clearly articulated to laymen. Furthermore, he mentioned that to be able to understand more about biodiversity, there is a need to put up natural museums and highlight the significant resources in the region such as flora, fauna, minerals, and others. Research conducted by academes should be applied to communities in order to improve the quality of life of all concerned and it would be more advantageous if everyone will have information and resource sharing.

On the other hand, Dr. Hirayama lectured on Diversity, structure, and biological function of algal lectins. His talk centered on Glycobiology development and determines its application for different biological function.  Dr. Hirayama and his research team in Japan are discovering the application of novel algal lectins for cancer diagnosis and other emerging diseases.
