Caraga State University, through the Office of Gender and Development, pushes gender-based initiatives to a higher level through its GADkilos: Mobilizing Volunteers for Gender Advocacy and Action activity for GAD student volunteers. Held at the Administration Building’s Conference Hall on August 20, 2026, the orientation was conducted for students who will be champions of gender equality and safe spaces, as well as agents of change within their respective spaces and colleges.
The term “GADKilos” combines GAD (Gender and Development) and the Filipino word “kilos,” meaning movement or action. It highlights the importance of turning awareness into meaningful, proactive, and sustained action for gender equality and safe spaces.
The activity featured insightful discussions on Basic GAD Concepts and Relevant Laws, particularly RA 7877 (Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995) and RA 11313 (Safe Spaces Act), facilitated by Ms. Doreen Marielle N. Rosales, Information Officer II of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).
Furthermore, the session also provided a deeper understanding of the realities of gender-based violence through the presentation of the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) Data on Gender-Based Violence Cases Involving Women and Children, led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Junalyn B. Suan, Chief of the WCPD, Butuan City Police Office (BCPO). The discussion emphasized the importance of awareness, proper reporting, protection, and coordinated response to cases of violence, including emerging concerns related to cyber-related forms of abuse and violence.
The final session was led by Ms. Marjorie L. Escartin, who introduced and discussed the CSU Safe Space Code, providing participants with a clearer understanding of the University’s policies, mechanisms, and shared responsibility in creating a safe, inclusive, and gender-responsive campus environment.
With this activity, GAD student volunteers will continue to kilos, speak up, support survivors, challenge discrimination, and help build a CSU where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.
