CSU, partner agencies launch Ampayon Creek Restoration Program, conduct clean-up activity

Caraga State University (CSU), through the Pollution Control Unit (PCU), together with the Department of Environmental Science Extension Project for the Love of Waterways (FLOW) Team, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Caraga, Philippine National Police – Ampayon, students, and volunteers, joined forces in the conduct of National Clean-Up Month 2026: 3rd Quarter 2026 Adopt-an-Estero Cleanup Activity on September 17, 2026, at CSU–Ampayon Creek, Butuan City.
Dr. Vincent N. Cotoron, Head of the CSU Pollution Control Unit, together with the Extension Project FLOW Team, welcomed the participants.
A major highlight of the activity was the launch of the “Ampayon Creek Restoration Program,” led by the Extension Project FLOW Team in collaboration with CSU, DENR–EMB Caraga, and the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Ampayon. The program supports the long-term restoration and protection of Ampayon Creek through coordinated environmental efforts.
The program focuses on practical and sustained actions, including pollution prevention, water quality management, riparian rehabilitation, biodiversity conservation, habitat improvement, nature-based solutions, environmental education, community participation, and regular monitoring.
The cleanup resulted in the collection and proper segregation of 248.60 kilograms of waste from Ampayon Creek and its surrounding areas. This included 70.80 kg of recyclable waste with potential for diversion, 152.15 kg of residual waste, 15.25 kg of special waste, and 10.40 kg of residual waste with potential for diversion. Proper segregation was carried out to support appropriate handling and disposal of the collected materials.
More than a cleanup activity, the event highlighted the shared responsibility of the University, partner agencies, students, volunteers, and the community in protecting local waterways. In our case, Ampayon Creek.
